Minneriya National Park

The Minneriya National Park was originally a wildlife sanctuary until it was declared a National Park in 1997. The reason for this was to protect the catchment of the Minneriya Tank and the exotic wildlife that surrounds it. The Park boats of many species of flora and fauna, like the endemic Monkeys, Deer and Sloth Bear but its biggest attraction is the congregation of Wild Elephants called the “Elephant Gathering” when they come in their hundreds to feast on the grass fields that grow at the edge of the reservoir during the dry season.
